Massachusetts Inmate Tests Positive For Coronavirus

The inmate and his cellmate, who has not shown COVID-19 symptoms, have been isolated from each other and the rest of the population.

BRIDGEWATER, MA — An inmate serving a life sentence at the Massachusetts Treatment Center in Bridgewater tested positive for the new coronavirus.

The Department of Correction said it received word of the test Friday. The inmate and his cellmate, who has not shown COVID-19 symptoms, have been isolated from each other and the rest of the population.

The department suspended visits at all of its facilities last week. Staff at the facilities have been using protective equipment in all interactions with inmates. A list of anyone the inmate may have had contact with was forwarded to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The Bridgewater facility is a medium-security facility for inmates identified as sex offenders, as well as people civially committee as sexually dangerous. It is separate from the Bridgewater State Hospital facility.
