Retired Brockton Firefighter Dies At Age 95

Former Brockton firefighter Russell I. Gillpatrick died peacefully at his home on Wednesday

BROCKTON, MA — Retired Brockton firefighter Russell I. Gillpatrick, 95, of Brockton, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 20, according to his obituary.

Gillpatrick was a lifelong Brockton resident. He played football at Brockton High School and graduated in 1944. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. army and served in World War II.

A longtime member of the Brockton Fire Department, Gillpatrick retired from his position as a captain in 1990. During his time with the department, he earned a degree in fire science. He was a member of Christ Congregational church, U.C.C. and loved many outdoor activities, sports, traveling, and socializing.

Gillpatrick leaves behind five children, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and several nephews.

"He was a very caring and helpful neighbor," says his obituary. "His smile would light up any room and reflected his heart of gold. Most of all, Russell will be remembered for his deep love and undying devotion to his Family."

Gillpatrick's funeral will take place Monday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. at Waitt Funeral Home, located at 850 North Main St. in Brockton, followed by a burial at Melrose Cemetery. The service will be livestreamed and memorial gifts can be made to any charity in his name.
