BROCKTON, MA — A tornado warning was issued Wednesday evening for parts of eastern and southeastern Massachusetts.

The warning was in effect until at least 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Cumberland, moving east at 15 mph, around 6 p.m., the weather service said. The same storm was located over Smithfield, Rhode Island, around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday. Radar showed rotation.

The potentially dangerous storm was expected to be near Woonsocket, Cumberland, Franklin, North Attleborough, Mansfield, Foxborough, Bellingham, Norfolk, Wrentham, and Plainville around 6 p.m., the weather service said, followed by Medway around 6:10 p.m.

"Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely," the agency said.

A tornado warning was in effect for Pawtucket North Attleborough and Central Falls until around 5:15 p.m., the weather service said, adding that it continued for Brockton, Attleboro and Woonsocket until 5:45 p.m.

People were advised to take cover in a basement or interior room of a sturdy building.
