Brookline Board Picks Newton Library Director As Its Next Library Leader
Jill Mercurio is currently the Newton Free Library Director.
BROOKLINE, MA — The town has tapped a Newton Library Director as the person it wants to lead its library services into the future.
The Brookline Board of Library Trustees voted to begin contract negotiations with Jill Mercurio to be the Brookline Public Library’s next director at its most recent meeting.
Mercurio has spent the last five years as the Newton Free Library director. She was selected over Cambridge Public Library Assistant Director Erin Wells, who was the other finalist for the role. During the interview process, Mercurio highlighted her experience as a major advantage she had that Wells did not.

According to the board, the Brookline Library Director’s responsibilities include providing forward-thinking leadership to the institution, having strong communication with the board and library staff, streamlining library services and internal operations, preparing an annual budget for the library, implementing public programs, and hiring staff.
