Long-vacant Somerville Store Torn Down After 17 Years: Report

The store has been closed since early 2008.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A former Broadway staple was torn down in high-profile fashion this weekend, according to a report from WBZ News Radio 1030.

The Star Market supermarket at 299 Broadway has not been offering groceries since 2008, however the structure has remained for the last 17 years. Residents gathered around on Saturday afternoon to watch the building be taken down, including Mayor-elect Jake Wilson. Wilson described the abandoned store as an “eye sore” that needs to be replaced with something more beneficial to the community. The future plans for the site reportedly include affordable housing, retail, and community parking.
