Brookline Interim School Superintendent Eyes Job In Salem
Superintendent Ben Lummis is in the running for a permanent superintendent position in Salem.

BROOKLINE, MA — Interim School Superintendent Ben Lummis is one of four finalists for a superintendent job in Salem, according to officials from the Salem Public School District.
Lummis took over as interim superintendent in Brookline after Superintendent Andrew Bott suddenly stepped down last year. Previously Lummis worked for four years as special assistant for strategy and performance. Prior to coming to Brookline, he was vice president of professional development for EF Education First, founding partner and vice president of the National Center on Time and Learning, and he worked on the school committee in Cambridge.
Lummis started as a middle school English teacher in Needham and Cambridge. He has coached principals, supported schools and teacher teams in redesigning their schools, and led international professional development for teachers and administrators to learn about the education systems in Finland, China and England.

Lummis has also worked as an instructor for North Carolina Outward Bound School. He earned his masters in teaching from Tufts University and a bachelors degree in philosophy from the University of Michigan.
The announcement in July 2019 that Bott was stepping down came as a surprise to many. He left Brookline as the district working on negotiating contentious teacher contracts, finding enough space to accommodate rising enrollment after the town voted down a plan to build a ninth elementary, and a renovation of the high school.

Brookline is in the middle of looking for a permanent replacement for Bott.
