Man Jumps Into Back Seat, Sets Car Rolling: Brookline Police Logs

Also: Police arrest two they said were squatting in a vacant apartment in Brookline Village and more.

BROOKLINE, MA — Police respond to dozens of emergency calls each day. The following reports are taken from the public police log and the Brookline Police blog. It's important to note that just because someone reports an incident to police doesn't mean that's the way it happened.

Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020

Broken windows: At 3:30 a.m., someone reported a person breaking windows at a gas station on Commonwealth Avenue. When they got there, officers saw a person inside the store with windows broken, stealing items. Police said the person refused to comply with the officer's commands and ran off, prompting a chase. The person was arrested a short distance away.

Stolen wallet: At 3:26 a.m., officers responded to a hotel on Boylston Street for a report of a stolen wallet with the suspect fleeing on Boylston Street. The suspect's vehicle was stopped a short distance away. Upon further investigation it was determined that the suspect had stolen the victim's wallet from his hotel room after being invited over to celebrate New Years. The suspect was arrested for larceny.

Fire: At 4:38PM, officers responded to a building on Beacon Street for a report of a fire. Upon arrival with the Brookline Fire Department, the fire was determined to be a minor boiler fire and was quickly extinguished.

Uber driver assaulted: At 11:00PM, an Uber driver was assaulted by a passenger he picked up on Beacon Street. The suspect reportedly smashed a beer can against the driver's head and fled when the driver said he was calling the police. The incident is under investigation.

Thursday, Jan. 2

Man climbs into back seat, sets car rolling: Police arrested Winston Marshall Jr., 39, of Dorchester around 2:27 a.m. and charged him with operating under the influence of liquor, operating to endanger, failure to stop for police and for an unregistered motor vehicle after an officer noticed an expired registration sticker in the car window, according to a police report. According to the report, Marshall was driving, but once police pulled him over, they saw him jump into the back seat of the car. As he did so, the car, with no driver, started to roll forward. The officer drew his weapon as he approached the car, put the parking brake on and ordered the three people in the car to put their hands up and get out of the car one by one, and re holstered his weapon, according to the report. Marshall said he wasn't driving. Police said they're gathering area video surveillance footage as they investigate.

Friday, Jan. 3

Shoplifting a TV: Kevin Haddad, 26, of Cambridge was arrested around 3:30 p.m. and charged with shoplifting, third offense. He also had a warrant out for his arrest for larceny over $1,200 from Quincy District Court. Someone called police to report a man and two women had walked into a store at 860 Comm Ave and taken a Vizio TV worth $169.99 and walked out without paying. Police visited the store, saw the security footage of the man and the women he was with. Police found the man near Comm Ave and Essex Street and he told them the two women took the TV on the T.

Squatters, porch pirates?: Christopher Differ, 38, and Brenda Nashawaty, 35, both of Hull, were arrested and charged around 10:49 a.m. with breaking and entering during the nighttime and intent to commit felony; receiving stolen property worth more than $1,200; breaking and entering with intent to commit a misdemeanor, trespass; possession of controlled substance class e (police said they found four Lorazepam pills on Differ) and trespassing. Around 9:30 p.m. someone called to report two squatters in a vacant unit on Village Way. Police said building management had followed the two people to the corner of Aspinwall and Brookline avenues. The manager told police the two had broken into a vacant unit on Dec. 20 and had been staying there on and off. He said they both had gone into the mail room at the building and stolen some packages. Police said they found dozens of stolen items believed to have come from multiple buildings in the area.

Burglary: At 2 p.m., an officer responded to a residence on Beacon St for a past burglary. The burglary was determined to have occurred sometime over several days with two televisions and an iPad stolen. The case remains under investigation.

Shoplifting: At 7:24 p.m., officers responded to a business on Harvard St where a suspect was seen concealing items without paying. The suspect fled the store when confronted by an employee. Officers searched the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.

Turned Herself In: Police took Sheena Twomy, 35, of Walnut Street into custody around 7:30 p.m. just a couple hours after police went to her home to inform her that South Boston police had issued a warrant for her arrest.
