Newton Elects Susan Albright To Lead City Council

Susan Albright of Ward 2 will become the president of the Newton City Council in January. The role is for two years.

NEWTON, MA — The City Council elected Ward 2 At Large Councilor Susan Albright to lead the council next year as president. The group of officials chose Rick Lipof to be vice president.

Albright is the fourth woman to be elected president. Carol Ann Shea, Cynthia Creem, and Brooke Lipsitt have all been president in the past.

The City Council, Newton's legislative branch of municipal government, is made up of 24 members - 16 at-large Councilors and eight Ward Councilors. Councilors are elected every two years.

Albright and Lipof were both voted into the roles with identical 14-10 votes. Lisle Baker was re-elected President Emeritus unanimously.

The newly elected and returning Newton City Councilors that will take office on Jan. 1 elected its president and vice president (See docket here), Thursday. The two will become confirmed Jan. 1.

Marc Laredo, who has been president for the past two years, also expressed interest in being president. David Kalis expressed interest in the position of vice president.
