BROOKLINE, MA — Voters approved the Driscoll School override in today's special election, according to the town's unofficial election results. The override passed by 1,182 votes Tuesday.
"This victory serves as a reaffirmation of our town's commitment to excellence in public education," said School Committee member David Pearlman in a statement. "It marks a significant step toward alleviating our overcrowding, and it provides our children with 21st century facilities to learn, create, discover, and play."
Brookline Clerk Pat Ward told Patch he thought turnout would be around 15 percent. It was higher than he originally expected, at 17.7 percent, or 6,724 of the 37,967 voters showing up to cast ballots.

Voters in Precinct 16 were the only to vote overwhelmingly against the override. That precinct saw the highest voter turnout, as well. The vote came right on the heels of an announcement that Hancock Village will be breaking ground on new apartments there in South Brookline.
In Precinct 13, the vote was nearly split with Yes winning there by three votes.

Driscoll parent Scott Ananian said the override's passing was just one step in a long process.
"We are committed to working on behalf of ALL of our schools. Driscoll will be the next step, but I look forward to continuing this work on Pierce, South Brookline, and our other school projects and budgets, until our all students' needs are addressed," he said in a statement.
