Cambridge Plastic Bag Ban Starts Today

Cambridge's ban on plastic bags and fee for paper take effect Thursday, March 31.

Cambridge, MA - Keep your cloth bags handy, Cambridge; as of today, plastic is no longer an option.

The city's plastic bag ban starts Thursday and impacts all retailers, from grocery shops to convenience stores.

Cambridge is not the first Massachusetts municipality to institute a plastic bag ban, but it is the first to charge for not bringing a bag of your own. Paper bag and reusable bag fees start at 10 cents.

Retailers who violate the ban face a fine of $300 per day. Stores are allowed to apply for an exemption to delay the ban, if they believe it would pose undue hardship on their business.

In addition, certified, compostable plastic bags are allowed.
