Framingham Election: Charter Commission Ballot Measure Passes

Seventy-five percent of voters approved a ballot measure that will decide if Framingham becomes a city or stays a town.

Framingham, MA - Voters vindicated the hopes of pro-city group Framingham First Tuesday, who got a charter question on the ballot that will decide whether the largest town in New England becomes a city.

The ballot measure creates a charter commission to study possible forms for Framingham town government, and passed with 75 percent of the vote Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

  • Former School Committee member Adam Blumer
  • Former Selectman Dennis Giombetti

  • Town Moderator Teri Bannerjee
  • Selectman Jason Smith
  • Former Town Clerk, Town Manager George King

Stefanini, Blumer, Leombruno, Cardiff and Smith were all involved with pro-city Framingham First campaign.

Unofficial numbers from the Town Clerk's office show nearly 5,000 voted on the charter question in Tuesday's election, or roughly seven percent of the town population and roughly 13 percent of registered voters.

Voters also elected Cesar Monzon and incumbent Charlie Sisitsky to the board of selectman for three-year terms. Heather Connolly and Richard Finlay were voted onto the town school committee.

Voters also elected new Town Meeting members, all of whom ran unopposed. The Clerk's office continues to tally write-in ballots, which could seat additional representatives on Town Meeting.

The official vote tally, including those write-in results, will be available Thursday, according to the Clerk's office.
