Malden Beats Medford In Fenway Park Thanksgiving Game

MALDEN, MA — An early lead gave way to a 34-15 win over Medford for the Malden High School football team Tuesday night in the historic setting that is Fenway Park.

Malden took the field against Medford this week as the two teams took their own storied rivalry to the big stage.

Malden quickly built a two-score lead before expanding its advantage to 22-0 going into halftime.

Medford chipped away in the second half, at one point cutting Malden’s lead to 22-15. But Malden bounced back, rebuilding its lead to secure the win.

Usually played on familiar fields in Malden and Medford, this more than century-old rivalry between neighboring communities earned the spotlight this fall as one of just a handful of matchups selected for a now recurring set of Thanksgiving high school football games at Fenway Park.

The high profile setting paired with a long history of Malden/Medford clashes to prompt excitement in both Malden and Medford in recent days as communities geared up for the game.

“Medford Mustangs are taking back that trophy tomorrow!” Medford Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn wrote in a Tweet Monday shared alongside a photo of her and Malden Mayor Gary Christenson wrestling over the Malden/Medford Thanksgiving game trophy.

"Go Malden, beat Medford," was the simple message shared by various Malden Police personnel in a video cheering Malden players on before the game.

Now with a win, Malden will keep its Thanksgiving trophy this fall.
