Malden Celebrates Flag Day

MALDEN, MA - The city celebrated Flag Day on June 14 at Bell Rock Memorial Park. The annual event was coordinated by Ward 1 City Councillor Peg Crowe and School Committee member Mike Drummey, a release said.

Mayor Gary Christenson, State Representatives Paul Donato and Paul Brodeur, local elected officials, members of the Malden Fire and Police Departments and residents were treated to music performed by the Malden High School Choral Arts Society and the Malden High School Band, a release said. The Invocation was performed by Salvation Army Captain James Labbe, atraditional Flag folding ceremony was demonstrated with Sergeant Joe Pullen officiating while Eagle Scout Paul Albright read the meaning for each of the folds of the flag and Pastor Justin Gottlieb from the Seven Mile Road Church closed the ceremony, a release said.

Sean Cunningham and the organization Paddy’s Give Back to Veterans were awarded with citations for their longstanding commitment to our service men and women, a rleease said. Recently in collaboration with Hugh O’Neill’s restaurant, Paddy’s Give Back raised money for Fisher House of Boston, an organization known for its network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving medical treatment, a release said.

Flag Day commemorates the June 14, 1777 adoption of the United States Flag by resolution of the Second Continental Congress, a release said. On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14th as Flag Day and on August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating every June 14th as National Flag Day, a release said.
