MALDEN, MA — Our Revolution Malden will rally against this week's riot at the Capitol Building, which the group called a "coup attempt." The demonstration will take place Sunday, Jan. 10 at City Hall Plaza in Malden.

"All summer long, we witnessed as the largest racial justice protests in history were met with the fist of police brutality," Our Revolution wrote on Facebook. "Now, we see that a group of insurrectionists are met with minimal police presence while breaking into our nation's Capitol to interfere with the results of an election they lost."

The certification of President-elect Joe Biden's election victory Wednesday was halted by a mob of rioters supporting President Donald Trump, who for days fanned the flames of his supporters' fury over his loss. Senators, representatives and Vice President Mike Pence were evacuated from the Capitol Building, which was overrun by people donning Trump flags and gear.

Photos from inside the building showed them in the House Chamber and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's office. Tear gas was also seen coming from the front of the building where some rioters climbed balconies and what is to be the inauguration stage when Biden is sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on Jan. 20.

Five people died during the riot, including a woman who was shot by police and a Capitol Hill police officer who died after he was injured while "physically engaging" with rioters.

"Many of the insurrectionists traveled to DC from all over the country, including Massachusetts," Our Revolution said. "Some members of the Malden community were directly involved in organizing and participating in the events at the Capitol. For this reason, it is important that citizens from Malden loudly reject this affront on our democracy, and call out the systemic problems that enabled it to happen."

Sunday's demonstration begins at 12 p.m.
