MALDEN, MA — Malden voters overwhelmingly approved a pair of non-binding ballot questions concerning health care and transparency in the State Legislature in 2022 state elections this week, preliminary results show.
The city released its preliminary results on Tuesday night, with voters in line with many statewide trends elsewhere on the ballot as Democrats including gubernatorial candidate Maura Healey soared to apparent wins.
Regionally, Malden voters backed incumbent Katherine Clark, a Democrat, in her race with Caroline Colarusso, a Republican, to represent the Fifth Congressional District in the U.S. Congress.

Voters further supported State Sen. Jason Lewis in his efforts to fend off a challenge from Wakefield Town Councilor and Republican Ed Dombroski in the Massachusetts Fifth Middlesex State Senate District.
Clark was projected as the winner in her race by the Associated Press late Tuesday. Lewis, a Democrat, declared victory roughly an hour after polls closed this week at an event in Malden. Some results were still yet to come in for the Fifth Middlesex Race as of Wednesday morning around 8 a.m., though Lewis held a lead according to Associated Press vote counts.

Where three out of four statewide ballot questions remained uncalled as of Wednesday morning with large portions of votes still set to be counted, results in Malden local ballot question voting appeared to show decisive “yes” wins.
Question 5 appeared on the ballot as part of a statewide push in select State House of Representative Districts across Massachusetts. The question asked voters whether their representatives should be asked to vote in favor of a statewide single payer universal health care program in Massachusetts.
Question 6 similarly appeared in select Massachusetts House districts. It concerned current Beacon Hill policies that keep some legislative committee votes secret. The question asked voters whether their representatives should be instructed to vote to change those policies.
In Malden, the local questions were on ballots for voters in districts currently represented by reps. Steven Ultrino and Paul Donato. The portion of Malden contained in a district currently represented by State Rep. Kate Lipper-Garabedian was omitted.
While a "yes" vote on these ballot questions, if confirmed, would send directives to Ultrino and Donato, the questions remain non-binding, wielding no formal power over policy or action.
