UPDATE: Knife-Wielding Man Killed by Police Identified

It is the sixth time this year an officer has fatally shot someone in Massachusetts, according to a database.

Update: The man was identified Friday night as Mario Mejia Martinez.

Everett, MA - The Middlesex District Attorney's office confirms a man was shot dead by police in Everett Thursday afternoon, after reportedly threatening officers with a knife.

Per the DA's office, about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, police responded to reports of a man harassing pedestrians in front of 432 Chelsea Street, near the corner of Chelsea and Broadway. Martinez approached officers and allegedly drew a knife, moving toward them and ignoring multiple commands to drop the weapon, witnesses told the DA.

The officer, unnamed in the DA's report, shot Martinez, who was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, the DA's office said.

It was the sixth time in 2016 an officer has fatally shot someone in Massachusetts, according to the newspaper The Guardian.

The officer was not injured during the incident, and has been placed on administrative leave, which is Everett Police Department Policy.

This is an open and active investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office and the Everett Police Department.
