Trash Holiday Planned In Malden
Malden residents with extra trash during the holiday season will have a chance to save money on pay-as-you-throw bags later this month.
MALDEN, MA — Malden residents using the city’s pay-as-you-throw trash removal option will benefit from a trash holiday later this month, the city announced last week.
Ordinarily required to dispose of their trash using specific blue pay-as-you-throw bags bought at various locations around Malden, residents can instead use standard household trash bags during the trash holiday.
The trash holiday will run from Dec. 27 to Dec. 31. The standard trash pickup schedule will be running on a one-day delay at that time due to Christmas being observed on Monday, Dec. 26.

All trash must be bagged in store-bought trash bags with no loose items or extra bulk items allowed, as noted in the city’s announcement on Thursday.
Officials also asked residents to limit their trash to the trash accumulated within the week, avoiding larger home or garage clean-outs.

While recycling collection is free, officials reminded residents to check the city’s recycling guidelines to see which types of products and materials can be recycled.
Malden has instituted a trash holiday before. The practice is back this year, the city said, to help residents with an expected excess amount of trash during the holiday season.
Malden’s waste pickup currently operates with a mix of options. Residents can use the pay-as-you-throw disposal choice. Residents can alternatively buy a trash tag, which allows them to place any bagged household trash inside their city-issued trash carts.
Malden 2023 trash tags are on sale, officials noted last week. Tags cost $75 either online or in person at the Malden city Treasurer’s office at City Hall.
The tags provide a cost-saving opportunity, officials said, for residents who regularly fill their black trash cart from week-to-week.
Others who produce less trash can stick with pay-as-you-throw bags and save money.
Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated the price of trash tags. The article has been updated to note the correct price of $75, not $79.
