Around the Region: Somerville Officials Rail on Rats, Deer Smashes Wakefield Office Window

Some of the top recent story from just beyond Medford's boundaries.

: Employees at the Edgewater Place office park got a scare when a confused and sick deer crashed through a window and ran amok through several rooms on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the deer appeared to be sick and was also heavily injured from jumping through the window. The deer was banging itself off of walls and glass windows inside the office.  Police called in the Massachusetts Environmental Police, who were able to corral the deer and eventually put the deer down. -Sara Jacobi

: Katey Stone, an Arlington resident, was recently named head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team by USA Hockey.  Stone, who has led Harvard University’s team for the last 18 seasons and is the NCAA Division I active wins leader with 378, has been involved with USA Hockey since 2006. However, the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia, will be her first. “It’s unbelievable and a tremendous honor, obviously,” she said. “I’m very proud and extremely humbled at the same time.”  Stone, 46, will be the first woman to lead the team in an Olympic games. She has been the head coach of the national team at the last two IIHF Women’s World Championships; her squads got the silver in 2012, gold in 2011. -John Waller

Several members of the Somerville Board of Aldermen vented anger about the rat problem in parts of the city, and they put the blame at the feet of absentee landlords. The city's Inspectional Services Division was also a target of their frustration. Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston sparked the string of angry statements with an order that the Inspectional Services Division deal with a "greatly increased rodent infestation" around . "The neighbors have actually sort of got their own neighborhood watch group going. Imagine a neighborhood watch group for rodents rather than criminals," Heuston said. -Chris Orchard

Three women who working at massage parlor-type businesses in Lexington were arrested late last week after an investigation into alleged prostitution, including one Malden resident.  The arrests, made in two separate actions on Friday, June 8, came as a result of investigations into information received from outside agencies, advertisements, online adult sites and citizen complaints, according to Lexington Police Lt. Det. Michael McLean. -Patrick Ball

: The Winchester girls lacrosse team were the victim of spectacular goaltending and two questionable late calls causing them to fall to  10-9 in the Eastern Massachusetts Division 2 championship game Monday night at Babson College.  The Sachems had battled back from a three-goal halftime deficit to tie the game with less than five minutes to go and were controlling possession in the waning moments of the game. The Sachems were called for two sever fouls in the last three minutes that resulted in changes of possession and the loss of a player on the field.
