MEDFORD, MA — The number of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus rose by more than 100 over the weekend, according to the latest numbers from the city. As of Monday night, the case count stood at 519. The number of cases was below 400 as recently as Thursday night.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 1,566 new cases of the virus Monday, bringing the statewide case count to 39,643. The number of Massachusetts residents who have died from the virus rose to 1,809.

There are 9,253 cases in Middlesex County. Some 402 people across the county have died due to complications from the virus.

A state of emergency remains in effect until at least May 4. With Massachusetts being among the states with the highest number of cases, it's not clear whether that will be extended.

Echoing health experts, city officials ask residents to continue to stay home as much as possible and to wear masks or cloth coverings when going out for essential items.
