Fells Reservation Installs Pet Waste Disposal Stations
The project was led by Medford-based Friends of the Fells.

MEDFORD, MA — Friends of the Fells, a nonprofit dedicated to conserving and maintaining the land of the Middlesex Fells Reservation spearheaded a recent project that aims to reduce waste left behind on the conservation land.
In an effort to reduce the amount of dog waste left on the land, two waste stations were installed in the vicinity of Greenwood Park and Bellevue Pond respectively. According to the organization, those locations were chosen due to their high levels of foot traffic and a history of dog waste left behind. It also said that dog waste nutrients can spread diseases to wildlife through the altering of water and soil chemistry.
“We know that visitors to the Fells want to do the right thing,” Friends of the Fells Executive Director Chris Redfern said. “We’re hopeful this pilot project will show that if folks are given a convenient way to take care of their dog’s business, we all can enjoy a cleaner and healthier forest."
