I-93 Bridge Repairs: All Lanes Reopen In Medford

MEDFORD, MA — All lanes on I-93 South in Medford reopened Thursday following temporary repairs to the Roosevelt Circle overpass, MassDOT said. The overpass sustained extensive damage when it was hit by an over height tractor-trailer on Monday.

Transportation officials said the eastbound bridge at Roosevelt Circle is expected to reopen Friday morning. The bridge will have some lane width restrictions in place until permanent repairs are made, which is expected to take several months.

Drivers should expect delays on Route 28, the Fellsway and on- and off-ramps for I-93, MassDOT said.

"This was a challenging emergency operation for our crews and contractors to undertake, and we are very proud that it was done in such a safe and efficient way," Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said in a statement. "We thank the traveling public for their patience and understanding during the last three days of impacts."

State police cited the driver of the tractor-trailer $210 for being over height and violating a Department of Transportation permit.

The 2013 Peterbilt 367 truck crashed into the overpass around 3:20 p.m. Monday. The truck is owned by Dove Transportation of Lincoln, Alabama and was driven by a 57-year-old Alabama man, with a 54-year-old Alabama woman as a passenger, police said.

The woman was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with minor injuries.

State police said the truck was hauling a water clarifying tank, which measured 9 inches above the maximum height permitted. The driver also did not have flag cars, in violation of his permit, and deviated from his scheduled route, which did not include I-93, police said.

The tank hit the first and second structural beams on the underside of the bridge, splitting the first beam in two and leaving the second bowed, police said. The tank and the trailer also sustained significant damage.
