Norovirus Outbreak: Medford School To Close After Stomach Illness Sweeps Student Body
The school will be closed for at least one day after it had hundreds of absences on Wednesday.
MEDFORD, MA — An elementary school announced it will be closed on Thursday after a suspected Norovirus outbreak has affected a large number of students.
Roberts Elementary School at 35 Court St. had more than 130 absences on Wednesday, Dec. 10 due to children reporting stomach illness symptoms.
"At this time, and in consultation with the Medford Board of Health and the Department of Public Health, we believe the cause of this outbreak is related to the increased spread of suspected Norovirus," Interim Superintendent of Schools Suzanne Galusi and Principal Michelle Crowell said in a joint statement. "According to the Center for Disease Control, Norovirus is very contagious, with individuals typically experiencing symptoms suddenly, including vomiting. "
