Medford Police Chief Returns After Extended Absence

Jack Buckley temporarily stepped down this summer due to health issues.

MEDFORD, MA — Police Chief Jack Buckley returned to his position after a five-month medical leave, the city announced Wednesday.

Earlier this year, Buckley experienced extreme fatigue and sinus symptoms that led to a diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn appointed Captain Paul Covino as the interim chief in Buckley’s absence on June 10.

Buckley lamented how difficult the months of his absence was both due to his medical condition and being away from his job, however he said the time off has allowed him to become fully prepared to resume his duties.

“Thank you to the Mayor for her support throughout my medical leave, to Captain Covino for seamlessly stepping into the role in my absence and to the entire department for offering their support and maintaining their commitment to the community,” Buckley said in a statement. “I am so excited to be back and look forward to all of the important work ahead.”
