New DPW Facility Dedicated to Mayor Pompeo

The following press release was issued by the City of Medford:

“Mayor Michael J. McGlynn today announced plans for the opening of the new, state of the art Department of Public Works Facility, which will be dedicated in memory of Former Mayor Alfred P. Pompeo, Sunday, May 3, 2015, at 1:00 PM, at 21 James Street. The dedication ceremony will feature Medford’s Alumni Band, under the direction of Mrs. Marsha Caron, representatives from the United States Army, as well as, members of the Pompeo Family.

“Mayor Pompeo graduated from Medford High School in 1935 and went on to serve his country with great honor as an Army Staff Sergeant during World War II. The Mayor fought in the Battle of Bulge and became a Prisoner of War until the war ended in 1945. Mayor Pompeo was the recipient of two Purple Hearts.

“Upon his return home, he married the former Joyce McLellan and together they raised eight children, 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Mayor Pompeo was a teacher, school administrator, and local business owner. He was the Director of Guidance, Placement and Special Needs for the Medford Public Schools. In addition, he served with distinction as a member of Medford’s School Committee and Medford’s City Council, serving as Mayor in 1956 and 1957.

“Mayor Pompeo served in every decade from the early 1950’s until his retirement from the School Committee in 2009 at the age of 91. He was a founding member of Medford’s Mental Health Association, and was dedicated to the St Raphael Parish Council, the West Medford Community Center, the NAACP, the Greater Boston Association of Retarded Citizens, Italian American War Veterans, Post 8, and Medford’s VNA.

“In addition, he served as Director of the Mystic Valley Elder Services and was a Past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1012.

Pompeo touched many different aspects of our community’s life and this dedication is a fitting tribute for a man who devoted his life to improving the quality of life for all,’ said Mayor Michael J. McGlynn. All are welcome to attend the dedication ceremony and later tour the new Public Works facility.”
