Police: "Unstable" Man Possessed A Dozen Unsecured Guns

Man told police he was burning a wedding dress in his backyard when police delivered a restraining order.

When police went to 138 Murray St. to deliver a restraining order Tuesday, they found a man apparently burning a wedding dress in the backyard and a dozen unsecured guns inside, according to a police report.

Kevin LeGrow, 35, of 138 Murray St. was "seemingly unstable" when police went to his home to deliver a restraining order about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the report. He was standing in his backyard near a fire, which he said was a burning wedding dress, the report said.

A judge has since sent LeGrow to a state hospital for evaluation.

The restraining order required LeGrow, who has 16 registered firearms, to turn over all weapons.

He told police he would go in the house and get the guns for them, then agreed to go in with them and show where they were, the report said.

An assault rifle was lying on a coffee table in his living room, the report said.

"We walked him into the house and I immediately noticed an assault rifle with scope lying on a coffee table in the middle of the family room," the report said. "It was unloaded and unsecure, there was a loaded 30 round magazine approx (sic) 10ft (sic) away on a counter."

LeGrow said the rest of his guns were behind a bar in the family room, where police found an unloaded Colt .45 in a wooden box and two more fully loaded Colts unsecured, the report said.

LeGrow said he only had five or six guns, and they were "all over the house," the report said.

When asked for his firearm permit, he said it was in his wallet, which was under a pillow on the couch. He insisted he get it for them but the officers got it themselves, police said. They found the wallet under the pillow, along with a fully loaded Glock 33 handgun.

A police search turned up 12 unsecured guns of a wide variety, including the assault rifle and a double-barreled shotgun, the report said.

A records check showed LeGrow had 16 guns registered to his name. He said he sold some of his other weapons but couldn't remember which ones or whom he sold them to, the report said.

The officers decided to have an ambulance take LeGrow to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for mental evaluation.

"We felt his seemingly unstable mental condition warranted a check at the hospital," the report said.

A hospital psychiatrist spoke to LeGrow and cleared him for release, and he was subsequently arrested at the hospital and charged with 12 counts of possession of an unsecured firearm and one count of violating a protective order, police said.

At an arraignment in Somerville District Court Wednesday, a judge ordered him held at Bridgewater State Hospital for evaluation. His next scheduled court appearance is June 24.
