Tufts University Student Tests Positive For Coronavirus

The university announced this week it will close its campus and move classes online for the rest of the semester.

MEDFORD, MA — A Tufts University student has tested positive for COVID-19, the illness associated with the coronavirus, Executive Vice President Mike Howard announced Thursday. The student, an undergraduate, has been in isolation and is receiving care, Howard wrote in a letter to the Tufts community.

"Because of this news, we urge students to practice social distancing — cancel any parties or gatherings that are planned this evening or in the coming days," Howard wrote. The university previously canceled classes Friday and announced it would extend spring break to March 25, when online classes will start for the remainder of the semester.

Students living on campus must move out by Monday, March 16. Exceptions will be made for students who are unable to return to their permanent residences due to travel restrictions or other constraints.

Graduate and professional schools, some of whose academic calendars differ from the undergraduate schools, will also move predominantly to online instruction. University offices will remain open, and faculty and staff will continue to report to campus.

Students and staff who may have had contact with the student have been notified, according to Howard. Those community members will be contacted directly by the Medford Board of Health and provided with information and direction, including information on self-quarantine. If you are concerned that you may have been exposed, please contact covid19@tufts.edu.
