Medford Teen Lost For Two Days on Sugarloaf in Maine

Nicholas Joy, a 17-year-old Medford High School senior, went missing at Sugarloaf ski resort last Sunday while skiing with his family. A large search effort began in difficult weather conditions and after spending two nights in the woods, Joy emerged, discovered by a snowmobiler.

Joy stayed overnight at a Maine hospital for observation but was otherwise doing well after his experience. Joy reportedly built a snow cave to stay in and survived by using skills he learned on television.

Schools Embrace State Guidelines on Gender Identity; Councilor Questions Remain

The Medford School Committee discussed the state guidelines recently issued on the gender identity issues at their Monday meeting. Superintendent Roy Belson said the city's schools would be following the guidelines that were issued and a specific policy is expected before the committee in the coming weeks.

However, the next night, City Councilor Robert Penta said he believes the guidelines are not actually based on the gender identity law passed by the legislature last year.

Diversity Highlighted in State of the City Address

Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn delivered his first State of the City address in 12 years Wednesday and he highlighted the diversity of Medford, introducing many guests of different racial and ethnic backgrounds.
