5 Things You Need to Know Today: April 10

Inspections of triple-family apartment buildings in Milford has revealed that many structures do not have enough smoke detectors, or lack carbon monoxide detectors.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. The Milford Department of Inspections has spent the past several months inspecting the 184 triple-family structures in town. Of those, 138 have submitted applications, 84 inspections have been performed and 68 certificates issued. The most common violation, said Building Commissioner John Erickson, is lack of proper smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. The devices are required in all residences.

2. Maple Street, Jencks Road, Mason Drive, Birch Street and Veterans Memorial Drive are the streets where water mains will be flushed by the Milford Water Company this week.

3. A Business After Hours event will be hosted on Thursday by the Milford Performing Arts Center. Parking is available behind the building, which is on Main Street. Food provided by Dinner and Company. Price is $10 for Milford Area Chamber of Commerce members; $25 for non-members.

4. A plow truck that burned during the last snow storm of the winter leaves the Milford Highway Department one truck short. The insurance payment will be $53,466 on the truck, which will cost $140,000 to replace. The town will seek $87,000 from annual Town Meeting members to make up the difference. If the town waits until October, when capital expenses typically are covered, the truck won't be delivered by winter, said Scott Crisafulli, Highway Surveyor.

Louisa Lake will be off-limits for fishing for one day, on April 19, to allow the Massachusetts Department of Fisheries and Wildlife to deliver 500 trout at noon for the WMRC Radio fishing derby for children. The kids will fish on April 20, in a free event that will include food, prizes and trophies.
