5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 12

Casino opponents this week will listen to the experiences of Foxborough residents who helped stop a proposal from advancing in that town last year.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Last summer, Milford Selectmen authorized a program through ICE that allowed for an audit of the town employee I-9s, to make sure that all town employees are authorized to work in the U.S. A recent email from an ICE administrator to Milford officials confirms that, yes, everyone is all set. The town will get an ICE IMAGE program certificate soon.

3. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will hold several meetings this week, beginning this afternoon, that may be of interest to readers. A meeting that was postponed last week, due to the winter storm, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The agenda includes review of draft regulations for Phase 2 applications, the site-specific applications made by would-be casino developers. At 1 p.m. Wedneday, the commission will have an in-depth discussion about evaluation criteria for the Phase 2 applications. And at 1 p.m. Thursday, the commission will review the status of background investigations. All of the meetings are available through live streaming at www.massgaming.com.

4. Another meeting this week will be of interest to people opposed to a Milford casino, although it will be held in a neighboring town. "When a Casino Wants to Come to Town: What every resident and public official should know" will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Robert H. Adams Middle School, 323 Woodland St, Holliston.

5. A quick followup to a brush with Hollywood: Milford and Medway residents had some sightings of The drama is based on a novel by Joyce Maynard, and tells the story of an escaped convict (played by James Brolin) who hides out with a single mother, played by Winslet, and her son over a Labor Day weekend. The film now has a release date of June 1.
