5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 7

The winter storm heading our way is being called "Saturn" by the Weather Channel.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

Correction: The Milford School Committee agenda was incorrectly described in item No. 2. It's now updated to reflect the agenda for tonight.

1. First Nemo, now Saturn. The Weather Channel is naming all major storms now, and the one that is arriving in our area this morning is named Saturn.

2. The Milford School Committee is scheduled to meet tonight, weather permitting. The agenda includes discussion of the fiscal 2014 budget. We will post an update if this meeting is cancelled due to Saturn.

3. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will hold its regular weekly meeting today, and it's available by teleconference for people who can't make it to Boston. The agenda includes an update on the background checks on applicants.

4. The After Prom Party this year for Milford High School will be Friday, May 24 at PiNZ. And to help support the effort, the committee is sending flocks of flamingos around town. The flock stays for a day, then moves on.

5. It's tax season, and H & R Block in Milford has posted an announcement reminding readers that it has moved to a new location in Quarry Square, next to the Stop & Shop Supermarket, and also that it will provide free checks of previous tax returns for 2011, 2010 and 2009 if you need a second opinion.
