The Milford Police Department is warning local residents to be cautious of a new “check” scam that is currently making the rounds in and around the community.

Several residents in Milford have recently received checks in the mail indicating they are “winners” and are being “reimbursed,” or that they have “inherited” significant sums of money, Milford Police Chief Thomas O’Loughlin said in an announcement this week.

O’Loughlin added that one such check was sent to his office.

The checks, he clarified, were scams designed to trick residents into providing personal information, including bank accounts, to the scammers, or to cash the check sent in the mail and forward a percentage of the money back to the scammers.

“In either event, when the check bounces, you will be held responsible and your hard-earned money will be lost because most of these scams originate overseas,” O’Loughlin said in a statement. “No legitimate business or person is sending you a check or offering to send you a large sum of money.”

Anyone who feels they have received such a scam is encouraged to contact Milford Police at 508-473-7555.
