Milford Softball Off to a Strong Start

The Milford Varsity Softball team won its second game of the season, against King Phillip, and will play next on Monday.

Editor's Note: the following information was provided by parent Jim LeBrun.

For the past three years, two teams have been the D1 State Champions: King Phillip in 2010 and 2011, and Milford in 2012.

Every time these teams play each other the game is always a battle that draws a big crowd and Thursday was no exception. Several hundred fans from all over the state came to watch. The King Phillip pitcher was good, but as has been the case for more than a year, Milford pitcher Shannon Smith and the team's hitters were too much to handle.

Smith had 14 strikeouts and threw a no-hitter. That’s 27 strikeouts and one hit over the past two games. The offense banged out nine hits giving them 24 hits and 11 runs over the same two games. Through a true team effort, Milford scored one run in the second inning off a hard hit single by Lizzie Stallone. Caroline Fairbanks led off the inning with a double (two hits). Taylor LeBrun moved her to third with a hard hit ball to second, and Lizzie Stallone came through with the game winner, a laser single to right, easily scoring the hard running Fairbanks who was off at the crack of the bat.

Milford added two insurance runs in the fifth with four straight singles by Sam Bonvino, Smith (RBI), Fairbanks and Rachel Levine (RBI).
