Week in Review: House Fire on South Street and Selectmen Prepare for November

Life gets busy, and Patch certainly understands that. So with that in mind, here are a few stories you might have missed on Needham Patch this week:

1. South Street Home in Needham Damaged In Fire—A South Street resident and his dogs made it safely out of their home Wednesday, Sept. 19 after a fire broke out in the kitchen.
2. Dogs Rescued From South Street Fire Receive Community's Help—After we put out a call to the community for donations to help the victim of the South Street house fire cover his pets’ veterinarian bill, the animal hospital caring for the dogs received multiple calls from people offering up assistance.
3. Alcohol Sales Question Set For Special Nov. 6 Ballot—Needham voters will have quite a few decisions to make come November, including whether or not to lift the town’s longstanding “dry” status. With the state ballot already full, selectmen voted Tuesday, Sept. 18 to hold a special election on Nov. 6 that would include the alcohol sales question.
4. Selectmen Approve New Senior Center Name—Selectmen voted Tuesday, Sept. 18 to approve the Council on Aging Board's proposal to name the new building at Hillside Avenue and West Street "The Center at the Heights."
5. Citizen's Petition Articles Make It On Special Town Meeting Warrant—Two citizen’s petition articles will appear on Needham’s Oct. 29 special Town Meeting warrant—one seeking to create a bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee and the other seeking to create a rail trail committee to study the town’s two section of unused railroad right-of-way.
6. Former Needham Attorney Convicted of Mortgage Fraud—A former real estate attorney from Needham could spend time in prison after he was convicted of mortgage fraud in federal court on Thursday, Sept. 20.
7. Patch Launches 'Grocery Specials' Section—Patch announced its launch this week of the Grocery Specials section. Grocery Specials allows readers to browse local grocery coupons and weekly specials. Similar to the weekly circulars found in print newspapers by each local retailer, the Grocery Specials section has hundreds of retailers’ specials in one place.
8. Meet the Artist… This week, Patch chatted with “A Chair To Remember” artist Robin Carroll.
