Newton Non-Profit Granted Support For Food Distribution Efforts
Mass DEP supports projects that gather food and other valuable resources with the purpose of using it productively with grant money.
NEWTON, MA — Spoonfuls is a recipient of a grant of up to $50,000 through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling and Reuse Business Development Grant Program.
Spoonfuls is a nonprofit that recovers and distributes fresh food that would otherwise be discarded. The RBDG Program invests in businesses that it feels maximizes the preservation and longevity of valuable resources and materials. Spoonfuls falls into the collection grant category, which supports projects that gather food and other valuable resources with the purpose of using it productively. Grant recipients must create a measurable economic impact for the state with the funds they receive.
“Investing in waste diversion is a powerful and important strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” MassDEP Commissioner Bonnie Heiple said. “By supporting businesses and projects that extend material life and reduce new resource demand, Massachusetts is building a sustainable infrastructure that will significantly cut carbon emissions, equivalent to removing 1.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.”
