Newton Teams Make Statement in MIAA Tournament
Catching you up with the latest tournament results and games.

Over the last couple of weeks, Newton sports teams have been representing the city's top-notch athletic program and fighting through MIAA tournament play.
Several teams from Newton North and Newton South High Schools made it to playoffs this year and some are still working for a title. Here is an update on what has happened so far:

- Although boys soccer began the tourney as the No. 19 seed, the team has made it all the way to this year's North Div. 1 semi-final round. The team started with a preliminary round game against Lynn English in which they defeated the No. 14 team 1-0. In the first round game, the Tigers took down No. 3 Masconomet in another 1-0 victory, pushing them to a quarterfinal game in which they beat No. 11 Acton-Boxborough 1-0 in a penalty kick finish. They will take on No. 2 Lexington tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Woburn High School in the semi-final game.
- No. 16-ranked girls soccer managed to fight their way through a preliminary round game against No. 17 North Andover in which they came out on top 2-0. However, after their first round game versus the top-ranked Peabody, the Tigers ended their season in a 5-2 defeat.
- This year's field hockey team managed to make their way to the semi-final match in the North Div. 1 playoffs. The No. 12 team began with a preliminary round bye and a first round victory over No. 5 North Andover, a 3-2 win that came in double overtime. Nevertheless, the Tigers were taken down 2-1 by No. 4 Lincoln-Sudbury in the semi-final match.
- The Central-East Div. 1 No. 2-ranked Newton North girls volleyball team has had an impressive post-season run that started with a first-round bye and a quarterfinal 3-0 victory against No. 10 Boston Latin Academy. In last night's semi-final match, though, the Tigers were brought down by No. 3 North Quincy 3-1.

- Newton South girls soccer worked to a No. 20 ranking in this year's MIAA tourney and stared off the post-season with a 1-0 victory over No. 13 Marshfield. However, in the team's first round game, No. 4 Franklin ended the Lions' season in a 4-0 defeat.
- Like their Newton North counterparts, Newton South's No. 4-ranked girls volleyball has also had an astounding post-season run. The tourney started with a 3-0 first round victory over No. 13 Chelsea and another 3-0 win in the quarterfinals against No. 12 King Philip Regional High School. The Lions will fight in the semi-final match tonight against Quincy at 7 p.m. in Quincy.
