Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone feels Massachusetts should welcome Syrian refugees seeking an escape from the war-torn section of the Middle East.

Just days after Gov. Charlie Baker stated he was “not interested” in accepting refugees, Curtatone spoke about that very topic on Boston Herald Radio. He said the state should “absolutely” welcome the refugees.

“They are fleeing carnage, fleeing murder by ISIS,” Curtatone said on the Herald’s show. He believes America is “playing right into the hands of ISIS” by turning away from the many who are in need of an escape.

President Obama made his stance clear on the refugee situation, previously saying he plans to accept at least 10,000 refugees.

Curtatone wants to see the world eliminate the threat of ISIS, but fears America’s qualities of “inclusiveness, compassion, and humanity” will be jeopardized if refugees are turned away.
