SOMERVILLE, MA — A Medford man was arrested in Somerville Sunday and charged with his second drunken driving offense. Officers stopped 45-year-old Edward Atwell on Broadway after an alert was issued on his car for a possible drunken driver, police said. Atwell's eyes appeared to be bloodshot and glossy, and his eyelids were droopy, according to the police report.
Officers noticed a "strong odor of alcohol" coming from Atwell, and he was unsteady on his feet, police said. He agreed to undergo sobriety tests and take a portable breath test at the scene. The test registered a blood alcohol content of .205, and Atwell was taken into custody, the police report stated.
At the police station, Atwell took a second breath test and had a blood alcohol content of .23, police said. He was charged with operating under the influence of liquor (second offense) and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
