Students Stage 'Black Lives Matter' Rally in Somerville

Those who marched in the rally were advocating for the better treatment of black students at Tufts University.

Tufts undergraduate students staged a “Black Lives Matter” march in Somerville Wednesday, joining the ongoing nationwide movement.

Hundreds of students took part in the rally, which was held on behalf of the black student body at the university. Inspired by the protests at the University of Missouri, those who marched were advocating for the better treatment black students and faculty members.

Campus and city police were forced to block of many roads as the rally took place. Traffic in Porter and Davis Squares was impacted.

According to the protestors, Tufts does not offer fair treatment to the three percent of students and faculty members who are black.

A statement released by event organizers read: “We will not stand by as white supremacy attacks our bodies through racist policing and threats of violence, our minds through minimalist and altogether misguided educations that fail to address our history, and our communities through a deprioritization of black students on college campuses.”
