2. ACTON PARADE INFORMATION: The parade will step off from Acton-Boxborough Region High School at 10am. The parade will march up Main Street and stop at the town common where an abbreviated ceremony will be held. The parade will then continue down Concord Road and arrive at Woodlawn Cemetery, at which point the main ceremony will take place.

3. SUDBURY CELEBRATION INFORMATION: Following the parade, which starts at the Rugged Bear Plaza and heads up Concord Road, the Sudbury Historical Commission welcomes the public to its Memorial Day Open House at the historic Hosmer House. A display in the parlor will recognize the efforts of town employees, school employess and volunteers on town committees who have passed away this year.

The Ballroom will feature a military display sponsored by the Scott Milley VFW organization, presented by Peter Harvell.

Visit the wonderful collection of paintings by Florence Hosmer throughout the house and enjoy refershments in the old store room.

The house will be open from 10 am until 1 pm, so stop in before or after the parade. Free admission.

4. ODD HOLIDAYS HELD TODAY: Today is National Escargot Day. Let's go out and eat some snails. It's considered a delicacy by some. For many others, the thought of feasting on snails is just too yucky.

  • 1844 — Samuel Morse transmitted the first telegraph message, in which he asked, "What hath God wrought?"
  • 1883 — The Brooklyn Bridge, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City, opened to traffic.
  • 1899 — W.T. McCullough of Boston opened the first public garage. One could rent space for selling, storing and repairing vehicles.
  • 1935 — Major League Baseball’s first night game was played under the lights at Cincinnati’s Crosley Field as the hometown Reds defeated Philadelphia, 2–1.
  • 1958 — The United Press and the International News Service merged to form United Press International (UPI).
  • 1976 — The British and French Concordes made their first commercial flights.
  • 2000 — Israeli troops pulled out of Lebanon after 18 consecutive years of occupation.
  • 2001 — Vermont Sen. James Jeffords quit the Republican Party and became an Independent, giving Democrats control of the Senate.
