SUDBURY, MA—From legacy writing groups to health screenings and trivia to social gatherings and the mid-autumn festival, there's a. lot going on at the Sudbury Senior Center.

Lunch and Learn /Low Vision Presentation

On Thursday October 4th at 12:45pm, Karen Hatcher from the Massachusetts Commission for the blind will be at the Sudbury Senior Center talking about Challenges of aging and vison loss, what to do if you experience vison loss, and tips on interacting with blind individuals. Join us if you have experienced vision loss and would like to be part of or help lead a Low vison Group. Flu Clinic

The Sudbury Board of Health is having a Flu Clinic at the Sudbury Senior Center on Thursday, October 11 from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM and 5:00-7:00 PM. Please sign up for an appointment by calling the Senior Center at 978-443-3055. Bring your insurance card to your appointment and wear short or roll up sleeves.
Sudbury Dementia Family Connection
The Sudbury Dementia Family Connection is a monthly support group for caregivers that will meet on the 3rd Monday of every month from 1:00 - 2:30 PM. This support group is to help people that are caring for their loved one living with dementia, who want to educate themselves with current information that will help improve the quality of life for both themselves and their loved one. Eric Kessler, MSW from Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, an expert in the field of dementia and Ana Cristina Oliveria, Outreach/Information Specialist at the Sudbury Senior Center will be leading the group. Walk Tall, Don’t Fall!
Let’s talk about falls on Thursday, September 20th. Lunch is served at 12:00 PM talk starts at 12:45 PM. How do you prevent fall and what do you do if you fall? Join Sudbury resident and avid “Fall Preventer”, Sue Rushfirth, Physical Therapist, and Captain Kevin Cutler, Sudbury Fire Department, to learn about falls, fall prevention and what to do! This talk will be interesting, informative and fun, inspiring you to make the changes that can minimize your risk. Life Stories: Writing Your Legacy
Join us in this engaging and supportive four-week writing program beginning on Friday, September 21 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. On September 21; Exploring Your Life for Stories, September 28; Developing Your Writer’s Voice, October 5; Discovering Your Life Theme and on October12; Releasing Your Stories into the World. You will explore your life for memories, ideas and insights you can turn into personal essays, family legacy stories or memoirs. During each week’s program, you will read short examples of life stories, free-write to a wide variety of prompts, share your words (if desired), receive writing suggestions, and gain insights into the meaning of your life. Giulietta “Julie” Nardone is a writer and artist from Ashland. She has been leading encouraging writing programs in person and on-line since 2008 and loves to share her vast cache of writing tips and techniques. Her own stories have been published in places such as the Boston Globe, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Christian Science Monitor, MetroWest Daily News, Skirt Magazine, Purple Clover and broadcast on NPR. Introduction to T’ai Chi
Join Intro to T’ai Chi on Thursdays from September 13 – Nov 1 at 2:30 – 3:30 PM. T’ai Chi is an ancient form of Chinese exercise that enhances the flow of internal energy in the body, utilizing slow, graceful movements and mediation to help promote relaxation and well-being. Learn many of the postures and movements as well as basic concepts. Cost of class is $45.00. Please stop by the Sudbury Senior center to pay and sign up.
New Medicare Cards
Everyone on Medicare will receive a new Medicare card in the mail with randomly generated numbers. Social security numbers have been removed to help protect against identity theft. If you have not received your new card by October 1, 2018, go to http://www.medicare.gov/newcar... or call 1-800-Medicare. If you have further questions or need more assistance, please call the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055 and ask for Ana Cristina Oliveira, Outreach Information Specialist.
Turn the Page - Book Group
Join “Turn the Page” book group on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. Even if you have not read the book! The following book will be discussed on October 10 “The Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah. Please call the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055 with questions, or just drop in even if you have not read the book.
Soups On – Butterflies of the World
John Root will present “Butterflies of the World” on Thursday, October 18. Soup will be served at noon, presentation starts at 12:45 PM. This power point presentation features images of butterflies from every major continent throughout their life cycles. Participants learn fascinating facts about these enchanting insects, including myths and legends about butterflies in different cultures, distinguishing characteristics of the five butterfly families, wing coloration, feeding behavior and migration. Information about landscaping for butterflies, including instruction in establishing butterfly gardens, is also presented. Comments and questions are welcome throughout the program. Comfort Food Caring Café
The Sudbury Senior Center is offering a free Comfort Food Caring Café on Monday, September 24 from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Caregivers and their loved ones with memory challenges are invited to gather for a delicious lunch, entertainment, conversation, music and laughter! This is a chance for you to get out of the house, and let go of your worries. Mid-Autumn Festival
On Friday, September 21 at 6:00 PM, the Sudbury Senior Center will celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, a popular harvest festival, celebrated by Chinese and Vietnamese people. The festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, during a full moon, close to the autumnal equinox. The Government of the People's Republic of China listed the festival as an "intangible cultural heritage" in 2006, and it was made a Chinese public holiday in 2008. The Harvest Festival is being sponsored by a grant through BayPath Elder Services using Title III funding. We are providing you with an opportunity to make a confidential $5.00 “voluntary donation” toward the cost of the event. Come join us and learn more about the Mid-Autumn celebration, Chinese food and moon cakes will be served. Planet Earth
Narrator David Attenborough celebrates the amazing variety of the natural world in the epic documentary series Planet Earth showing on Mondays at 11:00 AM until October 1. Each DVD is an independent 60 minutes episode. Filmed over four years across 64 different countries, this landmark series transports nature lovers from the Himalayan Mountains to the depths of the ocean and everywhere in between. Planet Earth is the most expensive nature documentary series ever commissioned by the BBC. The series won four primetime Emmy’s for Outstanding Nonfiction Series.
