Samantha Abbott (sophomore) pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts. The offense was led by Daly Place (sophomore) who went 2 for 4, and Olivia Shaw (senior), who’s big triple in the first helped to get the Warriors off to an early lead.
Then on Thursday, Wayland fell at home in six innings to Mount Alvernia by a score of 4-17.
Beset with illness and injury, Wayland was not ready for a very talented M.A. team that came out swinging. The visitors took an early 7–0 lead in the first. And, it was too much for the weakened Warriors to overcome.Â
Samantha Abbott came in on relief in the 3rd inning, giving up just three hits and allowing only three earned runs. But, it was too late; as the damage had already been done.
Despite some aggressive base running, and quality at bats by junior Madison McNulty (2 for 2 with an RBI), it just wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.
The Warriors softball team will next be in action Friday at 4 p.m. at home versus Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School.
Boys' Volleyball (submitted by varsity coach Rod Fletcher)
DCL rival Newton South hosted the Wayland boys' volleyball team Tuesday and handed the Warriors their first loss of the 2013 season, three games to 0 in the best of five match.
Newton South, with one of the deepest and most established boys' volleyball programs in the DCL, took control of the first game with tough serving which took the Warriors out of their offense.
When the Warriors controlled the first ball over the net, setters Ben Haspel and Christian Eng did a nice job setting the Warrior hitters for points, but it was not enough and Newton won game one easily, 25-13.
The serve-receive struggles continued in game two, but the Warriors started to get more hitting going from Harry Leavitt and Cameron Chin and added a few defensive plays from Dave Cohen. Newton capitalized on the easy points from tough serving and won 25-15.
The Warriors battled back in the third game with setter Chris Connell and hitters Nick Tempesta, Kurt Straube and Greg Karpacz, as the teams traded points, but the Warriors could not catch Newton South who closed out the match with a 25-20 game three win.
The Warriors are next in action Friday at 4 p.m. at Westford Academy.
