Wayland Man Dead After Deer Flies Into Windshield

A well-known artist from Wayland with studios in Natick was killed when a deer hit the windshield of his car.

WAYLAND, MA—A Wayland man died Wednesday after a deer flew into the windshield of his minivan in Weston, the Middlesex District Attorney's office said. Weston police were called to Wellesley Street around 5:25 p.m. Wednesday evening for a report of two cars hitting a deer in the Newton Street area.

Authorities believe a sedan traveling southbound on Wellesley Street struck the deer, which was then thrown into the northbound lane, where it struck the windshield of a minivan.

The occupants of the first car were not injured, according to the DA's office. The driver of the second car, a man in his 70s who was by himself, was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He later died from his injuries, the DA said.

WCVB-TV reports that the deceased man was from Wayland, and was a well-known artist who taught for 30 years at Concord's Middlesex School until 2003. Trained as a medical artist at Harvard, David Lang focused on unusual art pieces ranging from sculpture to watercolor to photographs.

Lang's studio is located in Natick, and on its website he wrote, "For the last several years my sculptural work has become largely kinetic and interactive. It is often witty, profound and provocative. Much of it seems to exist in the realm of the unlikely. These days, my mind is in a whirl, trying to understand how to make very complicated things appear to be smooth."
