Plimpton Plays
The Maple Theater will host a special screening of "Plimpton!" the documentary starring the late local journalist at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. This summer marks the 50th anniversary of his tryout with the Detroit Lions at Cranbrook that became the basis for Paper Lion. Lions Hall of Famer Joe Schmidt is scheduled to participate in a question-and-answer session with Luke Poling, the film’s co-writer, co-producer, and co-director at the screening.Going Batty
The 12th annual 2013 Great Lakes Bat Festival, featuring residents from the Organization for Bat Conservation at Cranbrook, will take over the Southfield Pavilion starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. The free event will offer several hands-on activities, live animal shows, and speakers, including Janell Cannon, author and illustrator of "Stellaluna.". The goal of the 12th Annual Great Lakes Bat Festival is to spread the message that bats are critical to ecosystems around the world and to encourage their protection. The staff at the Bloomfield Township Public Library will try and stuff the Story Room with a diaper drive starting at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28. All diapers collected will benefit the The Detroit Area Diaper Bank. Diapers of all sizes and types are welcome, including open packs and adult diapers.
Gem of a Night
Main Street Franklin will host its second-annual fund-raiser for the Historic Franklin Fund, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at 30870 Kirk Lane in Franklin. Prize drawings and a silent auction, including the mural painted recently by the artist known as Malt, will be featured. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at Yanke Fine Design Jewelry, Deja Vu Designer Resale, or on-line at www.MainStreetFranklinMI.com.
