Animal Control Officers Will Spend Night In Dog House
Event To Highlight Dangers Of Leaving Pets In Cold

Saginaw County Animal Control wants to highlight the special dangers pets face with sub zero temperatures, so officers will sleep in doghouses next week to prove their point. As Metro Detroit enters its 11th straight day with high temperatures below 20 degrees, and windchill as low as -25, reports have surfaced of animals, particularly ones abandoned outdoors, freezing to death.
"We're their voice, we're the ones that step up to the plate for them," Officer Joaquin Guerrero told ABC 12 News.
Along with two other officers, Guerrero will sleep outside Jan. 12. From 6 p.m. Jan 12 til 8 a.m. Jan. 13, the officers will be exposed to the elements on Apple Mountain. Two officers will sleep in dog houses custom made by inmates at Saginaw Correctional Facility, while the other will lack cover entirely.

Students from a local elementary will monitor the officers’ comfort and safety, according to ABC 12. Guerrero is so committed, he’s sleeping with a dog chain on to simulate the experience of a pet who can’t move freely to seek warmth or curl up against the elements.
