Detroit Police Towing Cars That May Be Inadvertently Parking In A Bike Lane Near LCA

Residents say one car can easily block the signage along the street, so people may be parking there without knowing it's a bike lane.

DETROIT — Police are towing away cars that may be unknowingly parking in a bike lane along a Detroit street near the Little Caesars Arena in downtown.

Video posted to social media last week shows tow trucks hauling away roughly a dozen cars that were parked in the bike lane on Ledyard Street between Cass and Second avenues in downtown.

Residents in the area tell Patch they saw multiple people returning to where they'd parked their cars after the Detroit Red Wings game last Wednesday night, only frustrated to see that their vehicle had been towed away.

The bike lane along the street is marked with a solid white line, but there is only one bike icon and one bike lane sign in the same spot. So if one person parks there and blocks the sign/icon, it's likely no one else knows it's a bike lane.

It also appears the lines and bike icon haven't been painted/updated in years.

Residents say that people have parked along the street before without consequence, since LCA opened, but now the city is cracking down.

Patch left a message with a police spokesperson last Thursday seeking more information.
