Driver, Passenger Struggle For Gun On I-96 Near Grand Boulevard

Man Asks For Ride, Assaults Driver On Freeway

Late last night, a 30-year-old Detroit man was assaulted on I-96 after agreeing to give a stranger a ride in exchange for a tank of gas and $100, police say. Jan. 11 around 10:30 p.m., state troopers responded to reports of an aggravated assault on the freeway. Troopers say that the ride went wrong when the passenger began speaking in tongues and tried to grab the wheel. The driver, who is a CPL holder, became alarmed, drew one of his two concealed weapons, and began shooting.

The pair struggled over the gun before the driver was able to pull over. The passenger fled the car, still holding the driver’s gun. The driver then called 9-1-1 and the Michigan State Police sent officers. The passenger, a 34-year-old Detroit man, was later apprehended by Detroit Police responding to a report of a man breaking into a van outside a church. The suspect was taken to an area hospital where troopers interviewed him about the location of the missing gun. According to the Michigan State Police, a state police dog then recovered the gun.

The suspect was shot in the arm and remains hospitalized. State police are continuing to review the case before submitting it to the prosecutor.
