Funeral Scheduled For Slain WMU Cheerleader
Services Tomorrow For 18-Year-Old Western Michigan Freshman Damond Carpenter

Damond Carpenter loved his new school, and his role as a Western Michigan University cheerleader. The 18-year-old from Detroit’s east side won't return to his new team. The college freshman was killed Dec 22, while home for the holidays. The drive-by shooting that claimed Carpenter’s life was likely a senseless accident.
"I don't think he was the intended target," Detroit Police Capt. Darren Szilagy told the Detroit News. "The shooter was targeting people inside the building, and from what it looked like, (Carpenter) was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Wednesday, Dec 27, friends and family gathered in near single-digit cold for a candlelight vigil for the young man they nicknamed “Toine.” Saturday, Dec. 30, Carpenter will be mourned at the James Cole Funeral Home, 2624 W. Grand Blvd.. Service begin at 6 p.m. A GoFundMe page started for Carpenter’s sister has raised $5111 to date.
