Michigan Adds Nearly 1,000 New Coronavirus Cases Friday

Michigan health officials reported nearly 1,000 new cases of the coronavirus on Friday.

MICHIGAN — Health officials from the state of Michigan on Friday reported nearly 1,000 new cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed, the highest single day increase the state has reported since mid-August.

Michigan officials said 982 new cases of the respiratory illness were confirmed as of 10 a.m. Friday, bringing the state's total coronavirus caseload to 105,377. Michigan also reported that seven more people have died from the coronavirus, bringing the state's death toll to 6,526.

Nearly 700 new cases of the coronavirus were reported in Michigan on Thursday, with the state also adding 10 more deaths attributed to the virus. Over 76,000 people in the state had recovered from the coronavirus as of last week, according to state health officials.

Friday's uptick in cases is the highest single day increase in coronavirus Michigan has reported single Aug. 15, when 1,015 new cases were reported.

The news also comes as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urged residents to continue to take the virus seriously, announcing on Thursday an extension of the state's emergency declaration to October. The declaration was set to expire Friday.

Michigan is 18th in the U.S. in reported coronavirus cases, according to the World Health Organization. The group ranks Michigan as ninth in the nation in total deaths resulting from the virus.

According to the World Health Organization, the U.S. leads the world with more than 6.3 million cases of the coronavirus reported. Over 191,000 people in the U.S. have died from the respiratory illness, while more than 3.5 million have recovered.

Over 26.6 million coronavirus cases have been reported around the world, according to the World Health Organization. That number includes more than 876,000 deaths and over 18.7 million recoveries.
