Michigan Coronavirus Cases Top 94,000

The state reported 616 new coronavirus cases Wednesday, bringing the statewide case total to over 94,000.

MICHIGAN — Michigan has reported more than 94,000 cases of the coronavirus after adding over 600 new cases Wednesday, according to the most recent data provided by state health officials.

The state reported 616 newly confirmed coronavirus cases Wednesday, bringing the statewide case total to 94,278. Michigan health officials also reported that nine more people have died due to the coronavirus, as Michigan's number of deaths attributed to the virus increased to 6,349.

Michigan reported 477 newly confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, while adding 15 new deaths.

Wednesday's coronavirus updates comes as state officials announced additional funding for schools across Michigan, particularly where students and teachers have had difficulties adapting to virtual learning during the coronavirus pandemic due to the digital divide.

Michigan school districts and other state education entities will receive $65 million in CARES Act funding to help as they battle the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the state announced.

The funding will be used to help close the digital divide as students begin learning virtually and from home. It'll also go toward improving access to in-person mental health services, small group learning and child care.

Schools and universities alike have been combating similar struggles during the pandemic. On Tuesday, Michigan State University said it was going to be going completely online during its fall semester, just weeks away from students returning to campus for classes.

Michigan ranks 18th in coronavirus cases as of Wednesday morning, according to the World Health Organization. California, Texas and Florida lead the nation in that category. The state is ranked as the No. 9 state in coronavirus deaths. It has ranked as high as third in the nation in that statistic previously.

According to the World Health Organization, the U.S. leads the world in coronavirus cases with more than 5.6 million cases having been reported. The U.S. has also reported over 175,000 deaths attributed to the virus and more than 3 million recoveries from the virus.

Over 22.3 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported worldwide as of Wednesday morning, according to the World Health Organization. That number includes more than 786,000 deaths and over 15 million recoveries.
