Consumers Energy Projects Delay Spring Yardwork for Some Ferndale Residents

The utility says lawns on Leroy and Cambourne that were torn up during recent gas main replacement work should be fixed within four to five weeks.

Ferndale residents whose spring yardwork has been put on hold by a Consumers Energy project will have to wait a little longer to get started.

Work on a stretch of Leroy between Central and Republic that began in February has left torn-up lawns and frustrated residents in its wake.

"They tore up yards several months ago for gas line work and said they'd be back to fix it," resident Erin Molnar wrote in a message to Ferndale Patch. "Still have piles of dirt everywhere and it looks like crap going into spring when we want to start working on our lawn."

Consumers Energy spokeswoman Debra Dodd said the project – which replaced approximately 1,275 feet of gas main with durable 2-inch plastic, as well as the service lines to approximately 67 homes – was completed last week.

She said a landscaping firm that does contract work for Consumers Energy will survey the area this week before it restores the grade and lays down black dirt and grass seed on the affected lawns.

"We're hoping everything will be restored in the next four weeks," Dodd said.

A similar project to replace 570 feet of gas main and 25 services on Cambourne is slated for completion this week and will be surveyed next week; a Consumers' contract landscaper should have the yards repaired within four weeks after the survey, she added.

"We recognize it's spring and everybody wants to get out there and work on their yard," Dodd said. "We appreciate their patience."
